14 November 2005 - Northerns Cricket Union - Schools AGM.

Northerns Cricket Union, a provincial affiliate of the UCB of South Africa, held their 2005 Annual General Meeting for High and Primary Schools at Hoërskool Centurion on 14 November, 2005. The meeting was well attended by about a hundred delegates from most of the cricket-playing schools in the Pretoria region.

Multi-Media's Dev Oberholzer was provided an opportunity by the NCU to address the members. He spoke for about five minutes on the benefits of scoring with Palm handheld computers and highlighted the three essential requirements of battery life, outdoor visibility and affordability. Other benefits include the electronic transfer of teams and matches and the possibility of developing an accurate database of all match and player statistics, at a provincial-wide level. This could assist with the selection of regional and provincial teams.

After the meeting, a number of new users bought Palm Zire 21 units and Palmcricket from Dev.

Northerns Cricket Union, through the Schools and Clubs Co-ordinator, Mr Edward Khoza, had previously purchased two Palmcricket units for evaluation during the national youth cricket weeks to be held in December. This makes Northerns the first provincial union in South Africa to have a closer look at Palmcricket. Although not yet officially endorsing Palmcricket, they have given schools within their jurisdiction a tentative nod of approval to try out the product during school matches.

Thank you, Northerns Cricket Union, for your innovation and willingness to evaluate new technology. Under the NCU's enthusiastic leadership, school cricket in the Pretoria region is vibrant and exciting. We foresee interesting times ahead!
