Mr Philip van der Merwe is an energetic and dedicated teacher and cricket coach
at Alberview Primary, located in Randhart, Alberton, South Africa. When he first
came across Palmcricket and met Dev, he immediately saw the potential for his school's
cricketing development. His enthusiasm for Palmcricket and Alberview's reputation
for maintaining a healthy balance between sporting competitiveness and grass-roots
development resulted in Multi-Media offering a small Palmcricket sponsorship to the school.
This sponsorship was accepted by Mr Malcolm Kingsley, the principal, who took
delivery of 3 Palm Zires and one Palm Zire 21, all configured
with Palmcricket, in mid-August. The school would use the scoring devices
on a trial basis during the 2005 cricket season, for the U13A, U13B, U11
and U10 cricket teams.
Mr Gerald Hilton, the sports administrator and his cricket coaching staff immediately
embraced the new technology. A large group of Grade 5 and 6 learners volunteered to
be trained in this new way of scoring cricket matches. Multi-Media conducted an afternoon
training session that was attended by no less than 8 aspirant young scorers, mostly aged
between 10 and 12. Dev and Geoff were also on hand at the school's next two U13A matches
to assist with further training. This was fun! Without exception, all the youngsters quickly became adept
with the Palm Zires. Well done to everyone who participated.
As part of the sponsorship, Multi-Media will publish all Alberview matches on the Palmcricket
web-site, as well as player statistics for the season. These should start appearing by the end of
September. Watch this space!
